Daff says about her work, “I endeavour to communicate complex scientific themes using a variety of methods and materials, including laser cutting, printmaking, paper cuts and book works. My most recent work focuses on ‘Origins’ (the origin of the universe, nature and human life), the Solar System and the 540 million year old creatures from the Cambrian Era that lie at the roots of our evolutionary tree of life.

My work is not only a visual interpretation of scientific information, but on a more personal level, is a way to gain a better understanding of where we come from, engage with the natural world and appreciate the wonders of our universe.”

The event included a performance inspired by the poetry by Adrià Cid who is due to perform at this year’s Riba Rocks. A fantastic weekend in the village of Riba-roja d’Ebre.

Line Up Announcement – DJ Jonty (The Fishtank)

Here at RRHQ, we are very excited to announce yet another superb addition to the Riba Rocks line up.

Jonty’s adventure in music started in the late 1980’s, initially promoting blues parties and live music in the North of England then moving on to DJ’ing at warehouse raves and underground parties in London. Back in the day, his sound blended twisted acid beats with hands in the air piano house and the retro rare groove popular throughout the London scene. Always focused on moving the crowd whatever it takes, Jonty is known for varying musical styles within his sets – a skill honed by the best part of 20 years as a professional DJ working every kind of dancefloor from barely legal venues “liberated” in the name of raving to the finest functions throughout Europe in his guise as the in-house DJ to a major events company.

Fishtank colour logo with script RGB

However, he is best known for being resident DJ and promoter of “The Fishtank” a legendary monthly night that ran in London and Portsmouth for more than 10 years under the manifesto of “hard uplifing house”. Jonty’s role was to provide a range of funky progressive grooves to complement the out and out banging sets offered by guests such as Pete Wardman, and he can still be relied on to rock the floor with everything from underground anthems to forgotten classics mixed with fresher cuts. With plenty of carefully chosen up front new beats and a shed load of big tunes in his luggage, Jonty’s musical journey continues to Riba Rocks and you’ve got a ticket to ride…

Line Up Announcement – DJ Richie Wilde aka Rico Furioso

So, we have definitely left the best till last…you are in for a real treat. This year’s headline DJ at Riba Rocks will be Richie Wilde aka Rico Furioso. We are thrilled that our headline dj is flying in from Ibiza to perform his superb sets for us in La Vall. Just off the back of his Misselstock 2013 performance, we simply cannot wait for this…

“A larger than life persona, Richie Wilde has been DJing for over 20 years and has played at parties, clubs and functions all over the South of England under many different guises. From hosting Rock/Indie shows in London and headlining local festivals he plays to the crowd in his own Wilde flamboyant way.”

“Rico Furioso raises the bar for energy behind the decks, he is the next octave, the next level – he is the party. With dates in Ibiza, mainland Spain and the UK throughout the year Rico is a busy man. He draws on the energy of the crowd and gives it back at high velocity! Rico resides in Ibiza.”

Line Up Announcement – Yoga & Therapies with Tray Hughes

We are very excited to add to Riba Rocks 2013 Yoga and Therapies with Tray Hughes. Throughout the festival you will have the opportunity to join a yoga session or opt for an individual therapy in the relaxing Valley environment.

DSCN5343

A few words from Tray herself about the beauty of practicing Yoga:

“Why Yoga –
Why do I do yoga?? For me it’s a way to feel balanced and strong physically, mentally and emotionally. A regular yoga practice builds strength, tones the body, increases flexibility and relaxes the body and mind.

Yoga helps to correct bad posture and can undo injuries from the past. Lowers blood pressure. Help to manage anxiety and emotional stress. Improves bone densitivity. Tones and improves lung efficiency and so much more.

Yoga also gives me time out from the world, a space to step into and just focus on my body and my breathing, to connect inwards and outwards. Flowing through the poses, focusing on my breathing, really feeling how my body moves holds tensions and releases it.

DSC_0259

Mentally it has strengthened my ability to focus inwards, become more still and silence (for a while) the mental chatter in my mind, to be able to just sit still and be with myself in silence.

I love all yoga practices and try to teach different styles: Sometimes I like a fast flowing practice, getting really warmed up and being able to go into and hold strong poses and sequences, to challenge my body, sometimes to go at a gentler pace, to hold the poses for longer, breathing into the posture, feeling how the pose can change the longer you hold it.

I teach Yoga because of how it makes me feel, I love the fact that I can share this with others, to pass on the joy and peace I get from my practice.

Yoga can help people to move through physical and mental blocks in their life, to enable them to move, breath and relax more easily.

DSC_0128

Yoga Style – Flow

Brings together energizing and graceful movements with breath awareness to create a rejuvenating, meditative experience. Hatha postures are sequenced to allow fluid movement from one asana to the next. Think of a choreographed series of yoga postures designed to still the mind, invigorate the body, and concentrate the breath. The class starts by centering the mind in the body through breathing practice (Pranayama). It then proceeds through a warming cycle of strengthening and lengthening postures concluding with a relaxation phase to relax the body and mind and integrate the effects. Great practice for beginners & intermediate.”

Line Up Announcement – The Horn The Hunt

Ok, the wait is over… we are honoured to have as our main act for Riba Rocks 2013, The Horn The Hunt. Their headlining performance will be truly breathtaking within the The Valley environment.

1.DesertTHTH

‘Like a lone hawk gliding on arid winds above a shimmering golden desert, the unique sound of The Horn The Hunt fuses wandering and hypnotic synth melodies with hearty bass and primal beats to paint vivid and expansive landscapes. Ethereal yet powerful female vocals weave mystical narratives with beguiling lyricism, spinning tales of journeys, animals and other worlds. With both electronic and rock influences, The Horn The Hunt defy straight-forward classification and prefer to call themselves
‘pop music’ in reference to their desire to connect with people through story-telling and theatricality. Originating from the Pennines of West Yorkshire, England, The Horn The Hunt began as duo Clare Carter and Joseph Osborne during travels in 2008, where they roamed making music from the fjords of Norway to a log cabin in Greenland to blisteringly hot caves carved into the side of a canyon in Spain.

6.DesertTHTH

They moved to Leeds, UK, and released the output of their wandering: a first, self-titled album in 2009 and began to perform live, then signed to White Label Music in early 2010. Embarking on a new musical exploration with each record, they released their second album ‘Depressur Jolie’ in May 2011 and toured throughout the UK and Europe, with the live addition of Conor Lawrence on drums.

The Horn The Hunt left their management and record label in 2011, returning to the studio to embark on their next musical journey. They now have a contract with the New York based publisher Sarig Songs, and are currently working with their drummer on a third album, due to be released in 2013.’

REVIEWS
“Depressur Jolie plays the call and response game perfectly. Like the precise samples they deploy, each member of The Horn The Hunt fits together like parts of a machine, both relying on each other symbiotically to enhance the aesthetic of the other. The Horn and The Hunt are fine partners.” 7/10 www.drownedinsound.com

“The Horn The Hunt make their music atmospheric, but not in the same way that the current wave of Witch House are. Instead of slowing down and distorting samples, thereʼs a building presence that runs through their tracks, nuanced arrangements that serve to engulf rather than overawe. In a few years, a trawl through redundant iPods may seem like the work of science fiction, with dead genres and irrelevant bands dominating most played lists. Not everything ages well, but itʼd be a fair bet to say that these two will hold up a lot better than most.” www.thepigeonpost.wordpress.com

“The listener needs patience to interpret the visual and musical nuances emerging from the dusk. The action that plays out in the darkness might best be described by the Greenlandic verb “iimivoq”, which can be interpreted as either “water is drawn from the shore by the ebb of the sea” or “to call out for joy.” The tide sighs under the ice, rising and falling, almost indistinguishable from the singer’s breath. In this, as in other releases, The Horn The Hunt create a chilling union of human and earthly landscapes.”

Line Up Announcement – Ruth Theodore

We are incredibly proud to announce to the Riba Rocks 2013 line up, Ruth Theodore. ‘A humble and charming, yet challenging and compelling songwriter and performer. Described as ‘cryptic’, or even occasionally ‘baffling’, her natural lyricism and deliberate turn of phrase is that of a skilled writer in command of (and having fun with) the idea of contemporary songwriting. Armed with a dazzling array of unconventional guitar tunings, and the most surprising and characterful of arrangements, Ruth tells stories with captivating vocal dexterity. Ruth will be performing songs from her latest record with their complete arrangements, along with re-imagined favourites from `White Holes Of Mole Hills` and `Worm Food`.’ Watch Ruth’s latest video here.

BIOGRAPHY
Originally from a “nowhere place” near Winchester, Ruth learned violin from an early age, before teaching herself guitar as a busker on the streets of the south coast of England. Vagrantly gravitating to London’s east-end, via Edinburgh, she settled on the post-industrial waterways, where in 2007 she formed River Rat Records with now long-term co-conspirator James Hurst (Lola Colt, Victor Menace). The pair released Ruth’s debut ‘Worm Food’ in 2007, followed by the well received ‘White Holes Of Mole Hills’ in 2010 which was praised in the national press such as The Guardian and The Observer and aired on radio stations such as ‘The Late Junction’ (BBC Radio3) and BBC 6music. Live performances took place around the UK including appearances at Larmer Tree, Moseley and Glastonbury Festivals.

In 2011 as Ruth returned to writing songs her collaborative high speed musical sextet ‘Victor Menace’, where Ruth features on the Violin, released its debut and toured the UK festival circuit.

In January 2012 and back on her acoustic guitar Ruth opened for grammy award winning artist Ani DiFranco for two sold out nights at London’s Union Chapel. Over the following months, whilst recovering from emergency open surgery, Ruth recorded ‘Dear Lamp Love Moth’ released June 2013 on River Rat Records. Currently Ruth is performing solo and accompanied around the UK, is still living on the waterways and still writing.

QUOTES
“We still remember when the last Ruth Theodore album turned up in the office: all work stopped as jaws hit the floor, entranced by her originality. Well, one of the most distinctive, different live performers, singers, song writers and guitarists has done it again!” – fROOTS

“Songs so quirky and unexpected that it’s impossible to imagine anyone else performing them, following none of the more conventional styles of song-writing. And it actually works.” – The Guardian ★★★★

“Breathless vocals, angular, cryptic, and engaging. Beneath the self-conscious eccentricity there’s a serious musician.” – The Observer on Sunday

“It really is a fantastic record. Each time you think you know where it’s headed, you’re totally wrong.” – Simon Gibson, Abbey Road Studios

“Her tales of broken and strange people can send shivers up the spine.” – Q Magazine ★★★

“This is story telling at it’s neatest, but messy in design and complicated in spectre. Ruth Theodore pushes boundaries, tests the audience and the ability of music, instruments and words to be more than just a song. This album is evidence of true, distinct talent.” – Maverick ★★★★★

“Ani DiFranco and Martha Wainwright are the closest analogues – yet she’s more playful and dangerous than either.” – Uncut ★★★
